How it works
Calculate aspect ratios and resize dimensions.

Resize images and videos while maintaining proportions
Description
The Aspect Ratio Calculator is a design tool for anyone working with digital media. An Aspect Ratio is the relationship between the width and height of an image or screen. This tool helps you do two things: identify the simplified ratio of a pair of dimensions (like 1920x1080 being 16:9) and calculate new height/width values for resizing content without stretching or smashing it (distortion).
Inputs
- Original Dimensions:
- Width: The base width of your content.
- Height: The base height of your content.
- Resize Tool:
- New Width: Enter a width to calculate the proportional height.
- New Height: Enter a height to calculate the proportional width.
Outputs
- Simplified Aspect Ratio: The smallest possible whole-number representation (e.g.,
4:3,16:9,21:9).
Chart
- N/A: This tool provides categorized proportional measurements.
“Good to Know”
- Standard Ratios:
- 16:9: Modern Widescreen (YouTube, TVs).
- 4:3: Classic Television (Older monitors).
- 9:16: Vertical Video (TikTok, Reels).
- 21:9: Ultrawide Cinema.
- Distortion: If you don’t maintain the aspect ratio while resizing, your images will look “squished” or “stretched.”
- Social Media: Always check your platform’s preferred ratio before exporting video; using this tool ensures your file fits perfectly.
Examples
Example 1: HD Standard
- Input: Width: 1920, Height: 1080
- Output: 16:9
Example 2: Resizing for Web
- Input: Original: 1000x500, New Width: 2000
- Output: New Height: 1000 (maintaining the 2:1 ratio)
Example 3: Square Content
- Input: Width: 1080, Height: 1080
- Output: 1:1
