Estimate the volume and weight of gravel needed for your project

Description

The Gravel Calculator is a landscaping and construction planning tool used to estimate the quantity of gravel or crushed stone required for a specific area. By entering the length, width, and desired depth of your project (like a driveway, parking pad, or garden path), this tool calculates the total volume in cubic yards and the estimated weight in tons. This ensures you order the correct amount of material and avoid overpaying for delivery.

Inputs

  • Length (ft): The total length of the area.
  • Width (ft): The total width of the area.
  • Depth (in): How deep you want the gravel layer to be (standard driveway depth is 4-6 inches).

Outputs

  • Tons Needed: The estimated weight of the required gravel.
  • Cubic Yards: The total volume of material.

Chart

  • N/A: This tool provides direct numeric material requirements.

“Good to Know”

  • Density Standard: This calculator assumes a standard density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard for typical gravel. Note that different types of stone (like river rock vs. heavy crushed granite) may vary slightly.
  • Compaction: Gravel tends to settle and compact after being spread. It’s often wise to order 5-10% more than the exact calculation to account for this and any “thin spots.”
  • Standard Depth:
    • Walking Paths: 2-3 inches.
    • Driveways: 4-6 inches.

Examples

Example 1: Garden Path

  • Input: 20ft long, 3ft wide, 2in deep
  • Output: 0.37 Tons (0.27 cubic yards)

Example 2: Standard Driveway

  • Input: 50ft long, 10ft wide, 4in deep
  • Output: 8.64 Tons (6.17 cubic yards)

Example 3: Large Parking Pad

  • Input: 20ft long, 20ft wide, 6in deep
  • Output: 10.37 Tons (7.41 cubic yards)

Limitations
  • Material quantities are estimates. Confirm site dimensions, product coverage, waste, and local requirements before ordering or construction.
