Calculate the total mass of an object from its density and volume
Description
The Mass Calculator is a fundamental science and engineering tool used to determine the total weight (mass) of a material or object. If you know what an object is made of (Density) and how big it is (Volume), this tool performs the multiplication to find the resulting mass. This is essential for shipping calculations, structural engineering, or chemistry experiments.
Inputs
- Density (g/cm³): The concentration of mass in the material (e.g., aluminum is ~2.7 g/cm³).
- Volume (cm³): The total three-dimensional space the object occupies.
Outputs
- Mass: The total weight expressed in grams (g).
Chart
- N/A: This tool provides a direct numeric physics result.
“Good to Know”
- The Formula: $\text{Mass} = \text{Density} \times \text{Volume}$.
- Weight vs. Mass: In everyday use, we use “mass” and “weight” interchangeably. Technically, mass is the amount of matter, while weight is the force of gravity on that matter.
- Reference Densities:
- Water: 1.0 g/cm³
- Steel: ~7.8 g/cm³
- Gold: 19.3 g/cm³
- Air: ~0.0012 g/cm³
Examples
Example 1: Aluminum Block
- Input: Density: 2.7 g/cm³, Volume: 100 cm³
- Output: 270.00 g
Example 2: Gold Bar (Small)
- Input: Density: 19.3 g/cm³, Volume: 50 cm³
- Output: 965.00 g
Example 3: Low Density Foam
- Input: Density: 0.05 g/cm³, Volume: 1000 cm³
- Output: 50.00 g
