  1. 1

    Formula selected

The calculator uses the following formula or method.

    Age-based MHR uses the selected formula; percentage method = MHR×intensity; Karvonen = resting HR + (MHR−resting HR)×intensity.

  2. 2

    Values entered

Your values are placed into the calculation.

Enter values to see what is used in this step.

  3. 3

    Result calculated

The formula or method produces the following result values.

Results will appear after a successful calculation.

  4. 4

    Answer formatted

Displayed values are rounded and formatted using each output’s configured precision.

How it works

Use an age-based estimate or enter a responsibly measured maximum. Three common age equations are available because no age-only formula is exact for every person.

Input query strings and outputs

Use an input name in this page’s URL as ?name=value, and join additional inputs with &. Portable shared links may instead use the compact ?ac= state parameter.

Input query strings

6
  • ?age= Age

    Number · Required · Default: 35

  • ?maxMethod= Maximum heart-rate input

Choice · Required · Default: estimated · Accepted values: estimated, tested

  • ?formula= Age-based formula

Choice · Required · Default: tanaka · Accepted values: tanaka, fox, nes · Used when maxMethod = estimated

  • ?testedMax= Tested maximum heart rate

    Number · Required · Default: 185 · Used when maxMethod = tested

  • ?useKarvonen= Use resting heart rate (Karvonen method)

True or false · Optional · Default: true

  • ?restingHeartRate= Resting heart rate

    Number · Required · Default: 60 · Used when useKarvonen = true

Outputs

Zone methods

The percentage method uses maximum heart rate alone. Karvonen uses heart-rate reserve and therefore also requires resting heart rate.

Limitations
  • Heart-rate zones are estimates. Medicines, medical conditions, heat, altitude, and fitness can change a safe or appropriate range.
  • Health results are educational estimates, not a diagnosis or treatment recommendation. Individual circumstances may require a qualified clinician's assessment.
