What this tool answers

This page focuses on the energy estimate associated with maintaining weight under the entered assumptions. Its activity multiplier is an approximation, not an individualized nutrition prescription. The worked example uses no daily adjustment.

Formula

Maintenance = [10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + selected constant] × activity factor.

Worked example: Maintenance arithmetic without a deficit

Using the female constant −161, age 40, 68 kg, 165 cm and activity factor 1.375 gives BMR = 1,350.25 and estimated maintenance = 1,856.59 kcal/day. These numbers illustrate the equation, not a recommended intake.

Limitations

Individual energy needs vary. The equation and activity factor do not replace clinical assessment, particularly during growth, pregnancy, illness or recovery. Do not treat the result as a required intake or a weight-loss target.

Frequently asked questions

Does this maintenance estimate include a planned deficit?

The worked example has zero daily adjustment, so it does not build in a deficit.

What does the activity multiplier represent here?

It scales the resting-energy estimate using a selected activity assumption, not a direct measurement.

Is the estimated maintenance number a nutrition prescription?

No. It illustrates a formula and needs individual interpretation where health decisions are involved.
