Calculate your IRS required minimum distributions
Description
The RMD Calculator is a vital tool for retirees. Once you reach a certain age (currently 73), the IRS requires you to start taking annual withdrawals from your Traditional IRA, 401(k), and other pre-tax retirement accounts. This tool uses the official IRS Uniform Lifetime Table to calculate exactly how much you must withdraw this year.
Inputs
- Your Age: Your current age (must be 73 or older for standard RMD requirements).
- Account Balance: The total value of your pre-tax retirement accounts as of December 31st of the last calendar year ($).
Outputs
- Required Minimum Distribution: The specific dollar amount you must withdraw this year to avoid IRS penalties.
- Distribution Period (Factor): The life expectancy factor provided by the IRS for your current age.
- Remaining Balance: Your account balance after the RMD has been withdrawn (assuming no investment growth).
Chart
- N/A: This tool provides a direct, compliance-focused numeric result.
“Good to Know”
- Failing to take your RMD on time can result in a significant IRS penalty—currently 25% of the amount that should have been withdrawn (which can be reduced to 10% if corrected quickly).
- You are allowed to withdraw more than the RMD, but never less.
- Roth IRAs do not require RMDs during the original owner’s lifetime, though inherited Roth IRAs may have different rules.
