Calculate the ideal board volume (Liters) based on your weight and skill level
Description
The Surfboard Volume Calculator is a critical tool for surfers looking to improve their performance or catch more waves. In modern surfing, Volume (measured in Liters) is the most important metric for determining how well a board will float you (buoyancy). A board with too little volume will be difficult to paddle and unstable, while too much volume can make the board feel “corky” and hard to turn. This tool provides a recommended volume range based on your Weight and Skill Level.
Inputs
- Weight (kg): Your body weight.
- Skill Level: Choose Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced.
Outputs
- Recommended Volume: The suggested board volume in Liters.
Chart
- N/A: This tool provides a direct numeric equipment result.
“Good to Know”
- The Ratios:
- Beginner: Needs a 1:1 ratio (Weight in kg = Liters). This provides maximum stability and paddle power.
- Intermediate: Usually surfs at a 0.7 to 0.8 ratio.
- Advanced: High-performance surfing often happens at a 0.35 to 0.4 ratio.
- The “Big Guy” Factor: If you are surfing in thick wetsuits or in cold, heavy water, you may want to add 2-3 extra Liters to your recommendation.
- Age: Older surfers or those who don’t get in the water often should lean toward the higher side of their skill level’s range to compensate for fitness.
